In which I repeat I don’t think I read the same Wildfell Hall as everyone else

Tenant of Wildfell Hall is considered Anne Brontë’s masterwork, and even considered by some to be superior to Emily’s traditionally hailed genius in Wuthering Heights. Once I got over the stiff, crazy Victorian writing I found it to be pretty good too. But I’m pretty sure I wasn’t reading the same book as everyone else.
(Spoilers that you would find in a general description of the book to follow, though it’s not revealed until a quarter of the way into the book, if you want to read it and be surprised then you’ll want move on to something interesting.)
