Cartoon plagarism strikes again…
…forty years ago.
As Roger Meyers Jr. from the Simpsons pointed out to us already the non-caveman aspect of the Flintstones was stolen from the Honeymooners and Topcat was Sargent Bilko (*Phil Silvers show if you want to be all technical) done with cats. Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear and Chief Wiggum are Andy Griffith, Art Carney and Edward G. Robinson impressions respectively. (Incidentally, most of Hank Azaria’s characters are based not just on impersonations, but deliberately bad impersonations.) But there’s one that’s not as readily known now.
Muttley, Dick Dastardly’s canine sidekick, widely known for his distinctive laugh has achieved international fame attested to below by this September 2000 photograph:

If a bank in Japan thinks Muttley’s a big enough marketing draw for new customers, then that’s gotta count for something.
Now ready for who he’s based on?
