Narnia

Well, maybe we’ve alll seen the BBC special of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and thought. Wow, beneath this silly, cheap production there’s probably a pretty cool book. Well, the special was the book. I can’t explain how silly and flat all the books seemed to me. Maybe you have to read them as a child to appreciate them. Then again I’ve read another famous childrens’ series recently that was fabulous. But I won’t mention it here to avoid any ill-feelings from Narnia fans.

For those of you who haven’t read them, the gist of two or so of the books is that these “darkies” (C.S. Lewis’s words, not mine) who wear turbans, have curved swords and worship a false god (rather, satan) are incredibly cruel compared to the “fair-skinned” Narnians. In one book even the bold heroes go in “Brown”Black-Face to disguise themselves as the bad guys.

The fate of the heroes of each of the books (save #3) is so very weird that I urge you to read these short, silly books yourself to see.
