Well, yesterday was my 365th straight day going to photograph prairie dogs. They weren’t always out, but I always got a picture of their holes, or where their holes would be under 2 feet of snow.

I’d like to thank everyone who looked at my pictures and commented. I’d like to especially thank my regular commenter, without whom I would have been a lot more discouraged, and also I’d like to thank my occasional chauffeur without whom I’d have missed photographing on sick days. I’m continuing the project at my new site so there won’t be regular updates here, but I will post pictures from time to time, and not as many prairie dog ones.

The surest way to tell if a prairie dog barking far off is warning of danger or yelling at a neighbor on its territory is to look at the prairie dogs near you. Do they look concerned or run to their holes? Or do they continue eating while one casually looks over toward the noise? You can’t speak prairie dog, but you can catch hints sometimes. For the record, these guys are reacting to “warning” barking.

With the weather alternating between snowstorms and 50s highs the melting snow is producing a little bit of greenery, which the prairie dogs like more than the abundant dead grass right now.

While it’s comforting to know I have enough photos saved up to cover a dormant period of quite a while, I haven’t seen anyone since Wednesday and the giant snowstorm. They’re all right and having a wonderful time sleeping, but I still miss them. I did see the Christmas Bunny on Christmas and the coyotes snow wrestling on Monday (which I assure you is today), but prairie dogs everywhere have been absent. I really hope they show up before Prairie Dog Day (what those of us in the west use to celebrate Feb 2).
